Rivers State Govt in partnership with NAOC to correct environmental defects in Rivers State.
Rivers State government
says it has approved land for the Nigeria Agip Oil Company to set up a waste
recycling project at Mgboshimini in Obio Akpor Local Government Area of the
State.
Governor Nyesom Wike who
was represented by Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Kenneth Kobani , made
this known at the 27th National Conference of the Nigerian
Environmental Society NES in Port Harcourt.
Governor Wike said that
as part of measures to correct the environmental wrongs of the past, the state
government has also embarked on a waste to energy project.
Also at the Event was
the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Mr. Ude Okochukwu who represented Governor Okezia
Ikpeazu who is a member of Nigerian Environmental Society.
Governor Ikpeazu in a
speech said there was need for enabling legislative changes that would boost
the green economy noting that Abia State has constituted a procurement policy
which gives advantage to green initiatives and has re-instated environmental
education in schools.
At the event, Rivers
State Commissioner for Environment, Professor Roseline Konya at the
event commended NES for choosing the State for the programme stating that being
the industrial hub of oil and gas in West Africa and vulnerable to
environmental ills, made it the right choice.
Environmentalists from across the
world are in Rivers State for the four day environment conference which has the
theme, deployment of green initiative for economic diversification in Africa.
