WORLD FOOD DAY: Invest in deep sea farming in Rivers State - Experts tell RSG
As part of activities to mark world food day 2017, some
residents of Rivers State are calling on government to invest in deep sea
fishing and other potential areas of farming that suit the terrain.
An Agriculturist in the State who is a Deep Sea Fish
Farmer, Mrs. Helen Jaja commenting on this year’s food day said better
incentives for rural farmers would boost fishing.
Mrs. Jaja urged the state government to include practical fishing in the school curriculum.
Speaking on the theme of the observance which is, ‘Change the future of migration, Invest in food security and rural development’, an Environmentalist, Dr. Hyginus Oku called on the Rivers State government and other states in the Niger Delta region to take advantage of the swampy terrain for rice farming.
In the same vein, a youth leader who is the Chairman,
Nigeria Youth Organisation, Rivers State, Mr. Anselem Ezewho wants the State
government to invest in youths by setting up banana and plantain orchards as
well as palms and aquaculture.
The Youth Leader advocated a graduate farmer’s scheme
with enticing incentives to encourage young people go into farming.
Similarly, some farmers in
Rivers State have pointed to areas that should be addressed in order to achieve
food security for the Country.
