Rivers State senator advocates for a State Emergency Management Agency.
Following the devastation
caused by flash flood in some communities in Rivers state, a Lawmaker, Chief
Victoria Nyeche has called for the establishment of an Emergency Management
Agency in the state.
Chief Nyeche who
represents Port Harcourt constituency one in the Rivers State House of
Assembly, noted that the agency when established would serve as a proactive
measure to cope with various emergencies in the state.
The lawmaker emphasized
that the challenge posed by climatic change, makes it imperative for a
contingency plan to be put in place to tackle disasters in the state.
While stressing that
natural disaster cannot be avoided, Chief Nyeche suggested the building of
buffer dams where excess water could be channeled for other purposes.
The Lawmaker further
explained that the state emergency management agency when established would
swiftly respond to the needs of disaster victims in the state and reduce
