Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic Bill passes second reading in Rivers House of Assembly.
The Kenule Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic bill 2017 has scaled through the
second reading in the Rivers State House of Assembly.
The bill which was committed to the Assembly committee on
Education for further action, seeks to repel some sections of the principal law
of the Polytechnic, to conform to the new requirements of the National Board
for Technical Education.
In their various submissions during debate on the bill, the lawmakers, including the member representing Tai state constituency, Mr. Matthew Dike, noted that the bill when passed, would widen access to tertiary education in the state and improve the welfare of staff of the institution.
Also during plenary, the Assembly directed the management of Niger Delta Petroleum Resources NDPR to sign a new Global Memorandum of Understanding with its five host communities comprising of Atari, Rumuekpe, Obele, Ukumeze and Oshiboku all in Rivers state.
The House resolution was sequel to the adoption of recommendations of the Assembly committee on Public complaints and Petitions after carrying out investigation in respect of a petition written against the management of NDPR by the five host communities.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Mr. Ikuinyi Ibani who read out the
resolution of the lawmakers, condemned in strong terms the attitude of some
multi-national firms toward their host communities.
Mr. Ibani called on the National Assembly to reveal the laws regulating the operations of multi-national corporations in the country.
